HI Brian,

First of.. i am a learning beginning photographer aswell so i'm not sure if im qualified to give advice.. but here's me 2 cents ...

Well, i think the 1st step is to get to know your camera, what helped me get to know my D90 is the DVD from "the magic lantern"
How to make a good photo with the D40.. well ..a good photo is a good photo regardless of the camera... but my 1st thoughts would be.. liightbalance, field of depth, the two-thirds rule and well the subject
of your photo..but then again... i;ve seen some awsom photos not following any rule at all lol :)
Also just get a large mem card and shoot shoot and shoot...
I hope this helped.. Enjoy the D40 :)
